Husbandry Week

Day 10 (7/31/2023):
I did not go into my internship today because I was doing my story time. When I go there Amanda, the YAP alumni helping me, was already there and showed me where I would be setting everything up. We then did the set up and finished 30 minutes before it was time for the actual reading. When they time came a few people showed up, but it was really fun to read the book. I liked making over the top expressions and interacting with the kids. Once I finished reading the book I had the kids do the activity books and I walked around to see all the things they were creating. I really enjoyed seeing all the kids get creative.

Day 11 (8/1/2023):
I was so excited for Husbandry week because this let me live out my alternate life of being a marine biologist, but it definitely validated that it wasn't for me. Especially having to be at work by 6:30, but I started getting used ot waking up so early. I started off the week in the Aviary, and I started off the day by scrubbing bird poop off the floor.

I wasn't expecting this much cleaning to be done. However, I got to see the examination of an Ibis who is missing a toe. They put a "bandaid" on it but in reality they just put gorilla glue on it. Then I was asked to clean the acrylics on the 4th floor, but when I was doing the stingray acrylic they started splashing me because they thought I would feed them. I did eventually get to feed them later that day with the campers, and the way they eat is like a vacuum they suck the food up.

I then did breakout, which is where you take the food out of the freezer that is going to be used in the next 2 days so that it can start to slowly thaw out. I thought it was interesting that they just put 3 frozen fish on a cart.

I then accompanied the turtle, sharks, and Gulf Stream exhibit feedings. The turtle did not want to eat, and the sharks barley ate either. But the stingrays and other fish in the Gulf Stream exhibit gobbled up all their food.
Day 12 (8/2/2023):
There are different departments within the Husbandry team so each day I was sort of in a different department, but a lot of the time they work together. Today I was in Life Support Systems (LSS), and I did water quality testing. This was something I found funny because while I had a phase of wanting to be a marine biologist my dad told me well most of it is water quality which is what I'm doing. However, I still found it really fun to do.

I then went to the town hall meeting to introduce the new CEO, and I was really grateful because they were giving certificates to all the interns as appreciation and that was really cool.

Then there was a flood in one of the LSS rooms so we had to go and clean that up.

I then got to watch another feeding, but Miko the turtle didn't want to eat again, but they do 4 feedings a day, but the turtle only gets 2 of those feedings as a chance to eat.
Day 13 (8/3/2023):
This day I was an Aquarist, this means I'm cleaning and doing food prep all day. I started off by cleaning some of the filters for the tanks.

I then started cleaning the tank and was being taught what to do. To clean the tank you have to scrub off some gunk from the inside and also feed them and clean the outside with Brillianize. I then did this for all the windows around this part of the museum, so that everything looks clear and shiny so you don't see the finger prints of kids that like to touch everything.

I then did another feeding, and still didn't have the best results the turtle still wouldn't eat. I then went to go help in the herpetology area in cleaning a shelter of on Eastern Indigo snake. My job was to hold the snake, and while I was hesitant at first, I loved holding the snake. It stayed wrapped around my waist and would move here and there, but that part was so cool because it was something I've never experienced before.

Day 14/15 (8/4/5):
I am combining these two days because I did the same thing both days. The way the schedule works for the Husbandry team is that they all work Tuesday-Thursday, then take turns working Friday-Saturday and Sunday-Monday. So, the team said they really needed my help these next two days. These days were like test days to see if I learned how to do everything properly. So, I cleaned the tanks and fed the fish, and also assisted on some of the feedings for the Gulf Stream Exhibit. While I was doing food prep, cutting up fish guts and what not, I got 3 squid in a row who all had fish inside them because the squid were wild caught. Because it was my last day, Miko finally decided to eat until they tried to give her medicine and she wouldn't budge. I also got to do the broadcast feeding which is fun because I get to launch food into the water. It was also my last day feeding the stingrays and they splashed me like crazy and my shirt ended up being soaking wet. Overall this week was really fun and I'm glad I've been able to see all sorts of things, and not just be behind a desk for the next 4 weeks.
