Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science Week 4

Conservation Week

Day 16-18 (August 7-9,2023):
For this week I decided to combine these days because I did pretty much the same thing everyday. I started out the week sitting in on a meeting about an upcoming conservation program they have with underprivileged high schoolers. It was nice to see the efforts the Museum is making not just in conservation, but also in helping those who want to find careers in marine sciences but don't have the means to do so. I also did surveying, I stood in front of the gift shop and asked people to take a survey about what they know about Florida's coral reefs. A lot of the time I had to translate the survey in Spanish, which was a bit tricky with all of the technical terms that they used in the survey. Overall though in 3 days, or 6 hours, I got about 56 surveys. I thought that was a pretty good number with all the no's I received and also having to survey every 3rd person. I then worked on a few posters throughout the week about certain days/months that celebrate the environment. The events being Earth Day, World's Oceans Day, and Sustainability Month. I liked being creative and for the World's Oceans Day poster I included only the animals that can be seen at Frost in order to market the museum a bit.  I also got to spend some time in the Wet Lab where they grow corals and jellyfish. I got to talk to people about corals, and I used my Spanish skills and talked to Spanish speakers. I never realized how many Latinos visited the Museum. I also did weeding, which is pretty self explanatory, I took out weeds from plants that they grow to late out plant.

Day 19 (August 10, 2023):
My last day at Frost I started off by going to Key Biscayne to do a beach and debris tracking clean up. I met up with another Frost Science Intern, and we spent 15 minutes cleaning up the beach. There was so much I found in just 15 minutes, including multiple liquor bottles, and I wondered how much more could've been picked up. After we got the trash, we sat down at a picnic table and measured all the trash by its largest dimension. We made sure to measure every single thing, even tiny pieces of plastic, and recorded it for the information to later be used to track what things get tossed at the beach. I ended the day with a presentation about my time spent at Frost Science. I was given the liberty to make any presentation I wanted to so I decided that I would do a Digital Scrapbook, since I took os many photos for this blog. Overall, my time at the  Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science was really fun and interesting. I'm glad I got to explore multiple departments each week and learn something new.
