Childrens Discovery Museum Last Week

My favorite exhibit at the museum, the Vietnamese Tet Festival.

7/26, Wednesday

Due to Muneeba being on vacation this week, I mainly stayed in the art studio to support Evelyn. It was the longest time I had stayed in the studio. When Evelyn's meetings ended, she took over the art studio and I accompanied Jessica around the museum trying to find the department's missing foldable hand truck. Sadly, we never found it. We did, however, get to label all the standing holder signs with the name of the department it belonged too (one thing I learned about being in the museum is that every department is possessive of their belongings, sharing is a nonexistent term).

7/27, Thursday

I brought my sister to the museum today. She's only one year younger than me so she came as a volunteer. Together we facilitated the painting with natural pigments activity in the art studio. We also cut a lot of paper. Surprisingly, all the paper we cut was gone by the end of the day. For lunch we went to iJava with Evelyn. We all got a coffee and she was giving us amazing life advice.

One of the tasks Ashanti and I were assigned to was to organize the art studio prep area. The image above is how the art studio prep area looks like so far. Because Ashanti is no longer interning at the museum, my sister and I continued the organization process. We mainly consolidated the art supplies on the shelves to the left.

7/28, Friday

I was, again, mainly in the art studio. We had a lot of summer camp groups join us today so the art studio was a bit busier than usual.

Drawings I made. The brown watercolor is made out of coffee, the skin color is turmeric, and the pink is hibiscus.
The orange background is paprika.

7/29, Saturday

Today, Asheba came to perform for our Music Fun Under the Sun program. My project at the museum was to find local performers that can potentially come to the museum. Two weeks ago, I pitched the idea to bring Asheba to the museum. The Education Department liked the idea and they contacted him!

Asheba invited the kids on stage. I think his performance was by far the most interactive. He held the kids attention span for the longest. (Vivian, on the right, was taking photos for marketing).

8/1, Tuesday

I was supposed to come in at 11 am because I was going to attend the National Night Out, but I arrived at 9 am because I forgot. As a result I took a 3 hour lunch break to make up for the time I wasn't supposed to be there. Before my lunch break, however, I did storytime with Laura. Today's storytime was We're Going on a Bear Hunt. It was my favorite storytime. We created a whole indoor course where we all went hunting for a stuffed animal bear. We first passed the tall "swishy swashy" grass, second, we "splashed and sploshed" when crossing the river, then, shivered "hooowooo" in the snowstorm, and lastly, went inside the cave (a tent), were we found the bear! It was fun. When 5:30 pm came around, Jessica and I headed to where the National Night Out was going to be held. We had a wheel the community could spin to win some prizes. We were handing out vases, color scratch sheets, and temporary tattoos. We also had an art activity. Kids who were interested could make their own tambourine out of paper plates, ribbon, dot markers, and bells. I really liked attending the event. National Night Out occurs all over the nation on the first Tuesday of August. The purpose of National Night Out is to make communities feel safe, and create a caring environment. National Night Outs are collaborations with the local police department. San Jose decided to host their National Night Out in one of their most highest crime rate, low income, area this year.

7/2, Wednesday, Last Day

It was so fun being part of the Education Department at the museum. I loved my experience. I will definitely come back in the future to visit all the wonderful people I met. They are so amazing that they made a mini yogurt parfait party for me (since I love yogurt)! I also got to teach them a bit of bachata! After that, I was helping in the art studio, and I finished organizing the most I could in the art studio prep area because we were running out of storage space). In the end, when we were cleaning the art studio, Evelyn, Vivian, and I were talking about the supernatural (witches, ghosts, reptilians, skin-walkers, and Mark Suckerberg).

My yogurt parfait.

The table set up!

Thank you so much, Jessica, Evelyn, Laura, Muneeba, Bhek, Vivian, Ashanti, the Children's Discovery Museum, all the kids I interacted with, and YAP for giving me this experience.

Thanks!
