Week 3 at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes- Daniel Guerrero
Week 3 Day 1: 7/19
Week 3 began like the previous ones, with the completion of one project and the start of a new one. However, it had an unusual start for me as I had a doctor's appointment in the morning, resulting in me arriving at work later than usual with a sore arm from my final pre-college immunizations.
Because of the late start, my day was a bit less eventful than usual. I spent most of my time creating a collage of images for the upcoming '90s party/singalong this weekend. In addition to this assignment, I was also rushing to f
inish my blog because I was going to the Peso Pluma concert that night! 😁
Even though Wednesday was a slower day in the office, the exciting concert ahead made up for it, and I couldn't wait to leave work and head straight to the show after the day was done! :)
Day 2: 7/20
Thursday marked the beginning of my next project! However, before I could dive into it, I had to deal with the logistics of commuting. Since I had gone to the Peso Pluma concert the previous night and ended up at my parent's place, I had to take the train from the valley all the way downtown, as opposed to my usual bus route from my Nina's just a few blocks away. While I’m not a morning person, the train ride wasn't too bad.
Upon arriving at work, I joined my supervisor Abelardo for a meeting with the Getty interns, with who I spent part of the previous week. They presented their final project on their website, showcasing a new page they created for teachers to schedule visits to LA Plaza. It was impressive to see their work and the effort they put into it.
After the meeting, Abelardo had to attend another leadership meeting, leaving me to work on my own tasks for a little while before lunch. When I returned from lunch, I was eager to get started on my new assignment, which explored the relationship between art and politics. I focused on founder Gloria Molina and board member Esteban Torres, both government officials who passionately advocated for the arts within their elected offices.
I was thrilled to work on this project and immediately immersed myself in research, delving into various events, the history of Los Angeles and its art scene, and more. However, my research for the day was cut short due to an exciting field trip.
In the company of Abelardo and Cecilia from LA Tienda (LA Plaza's shop), I visited the Republic of Lucha, a store specializing in Lucha Libre merchandise and other intriguing items. Since I used to live and breathe pro-wrestling, I was amazed by the store's plethora of pro-wrestling memorabilia. While the others were looking at the screen printing process of the t-shirts we were planning on selling for LA Tienda, I took the opportunity to explore the store and all of its displays of memorabilia and art.
After our visit to Republic of Lucha, we decided to grab a meal, and surprisingly, I ran into one of my old friends who happened to live in the area. We exchanged greetings and had a brief chat before parting ways.
Following our meal, Cecilia and I headed back home on the light rail, concluding an eventful and super fun day.
Day 3-5: 7/21-7/25
During my online workdays, my primary focus was completing the assigned project on Art and Politics. My presentation aimed to explore the intricate relationship between art and politics, highlighting its advocates, its history, and its future in Los Angeles.
To learn more about my presentation, I dove into various articles and reports from reputable news outlets such as NPR and Suspended Coffee. These sources shed light on the role of art in discussions about Los Angeles' homelessness crisis and Boyle Heights' efforts against gentrification.
Moreover, this project provided me with an opportunity to learn more about the founders of LA Plaza, such as Gloria Molina and Esteban Torres. Their unwavering advocacy for the arts and their own artistic endeavors were truly inspiring, as they fearlessly championed art, its funding, and its freedom throughout their careers.
Although I have made substantial progress on the presentation, it may still be a work in progress, depending on when you're viewing this.
Also, on Monday, I had a great time (shortly) catching up with Dayanna and Gabe. We got our vaccine status checked by the library to prepare for my reading this coming Saturday at LA Central Library. It was cool to see them again, and I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing them again this weekend. :)
