My Third Week With the Georgia Aquarium

Sharks! Research Habitat

This last week was an exhilarating and informative experience at the Georgia Aquarium; I had the incredible opportunity to engage in a range of activities, and each experience left a lasting impression on me.

Spending time with our animated 8-10 group of campers was a fun highlight of the week. Our discussions about marine life were engaging and I got to lead some of our lectures and activities. Ultimately, together our campers gave us a great time—and their genuine curiosity and enthusiasm for the underwater world, their frequent questions in trying to understand the animals they like, and their sharing with us all of their favorite things—made me feel privileged to be a part of aquarium and lucky to be with such an awesome group, progressing their learning journey.

During the week, I also had a memorable experience observing a new Shark exhibit with the campers. It was interesting to see how the aquarium designed its most recent space and how they were able to consider the guests and staff in building the area.

This week I also dedicated significant time and effort to a crucial project centered around linguistic accessibility. I completed translating all the online lesson plans and have begun working on my Spanish lesson plan and activity centered on Electric Eels. I learned about how the Education team for lesson plans must follow the curriculum and for my lesson plans I learned of what standards I could incorporate to be engaging and informative about these fish.

Culminating the week, I attended my first all-staff meeting led by our  CEO, Dr. Brian Davis. The meeting provided valuable insights into the aquarium's current initiatives, conservation plans, and upcoming projects such as Sea Lion outreach and transitioning to become a completely disposable-plastic-free establishment. Witnessing the dedication and passion of the aquarium team in safeguarding marine ecosystems reaffirmed my admiration for this institution's vital mission.

Ocean Ballrooms

This week has been nothing short of fulfilling and enlightening, and I am eagerly looking forward to the next week of my internship and forming unforgettable experiences and opportunities to contribute to the Georgia Aquarium's mission.

Stay tuned for the upcoming adventures, Adiós!
