National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) Internship Week 2- Angel Serrano
NHCC Week 2: Angel Serrano
Wednesday, July 12th 2023: Day 6
On July 12th, I started the day by greeting a daycare group and making sure they were situated with Annette. After lunch, I began work on the exhibits interactive portion. For the interactive the goal is to teach students how to use stamps to create printmaking. Annette one of the museum staff drilled some holes in the stamps while I put them through a wire to create extendable loops. I did this using a spacer, screws, a wire cutter, and a baby screwdriver.
Thursday, July 13th 2023: Day 7
On July 13th, I continued work on the interactive portion. I worked with Annette and Elena to roll out black paper to ink the pads, pulled out clipboards with foam paper, attached the retractable stamps to the wall using velcro to prepare the interactive space of the printmaking exhibit. I then created hinges for the ink pads so they could open easily.
Friday, July 14th 2023: Day 8
On July 14th, the big event happened. I started the morning by making labels for the ink pads at the interactive and sticking them on to the clear plastic part. I then went to finish off the interactive before the event later that day. Then I worked with the museum staff to prepare the exhibit area, by putting up signs, arranging a seating area, and setting up a display case. I moved the wagons from earlier and started setting up the art activities. I then sat and worked at the homemade stamp station. After the event ended around 6, I helped clean up materials and put them away.
Reflection
Working on these stamps and the interactive taught me some shop skills that I didn't really know I had. I also dealt with making a lot of materials and seeing that there wasn't as many people that you thought would show up, but being appreciative of those that did come and were interested in art activities. Getting to help put part of a museum display together, reminded me of the preservation talk during Washington Week and I got to see first hand how much thought is put into the exhibit sections.
so coolllll!!!!
