Dixon Gallery and Gardens Week 4

Dixon Gallery & Gardens Internship - Week 4

Day 17: July 27, 2023:

Instead of going to the Dixon, I had my second and final day of outreach. Today I visited the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library in Memphis. I have never been to the place but when I first pulled up to the front I thought I had the wrong address and ended up in front of a hospital that hand out medical bills with too many zeros. But anyway, the infrastructure was impressive and I was eager to go in and start my day. I was shadowing the instructor and helped her set up the tables with art supplies. The kids made their own flower stamp and stamped their creations onto a piece of paper that was meant for the library. However, the kids also had the option to have their own paper to keep and continue stamping. I noticed that one of the girl's mothers left with her younger sister. She seemed alone and shy so I went up to her and asked her if she wanted to color my stamp and help my artwork look pretty. She seemed happy to help and I'm glad I was able to put a smile on her face when she saw me lifting up the stamp and see her choice of colors on my paper. Hopefully, I made that girl feel safe and not alone while her mother was away for a couple minutes, and it'll be a core memory for her. I went home and worked on a card with English and Spanish directions for an "aquarium in a box" project.

Day 18: July 28, 2023:

For the entire day, I cut out stickers and prepared the bags with the instructions and supplies for the "aquarium in a box" project.

Day 19: July 31, 2023:

I finished translating pages of project directions so that I could start recording the next day.

Day 20: August 1, 2023:

I finished all Spanish recordings for the project directions. I began laminating and cutting ovals of decreasing sizes for a geode project. Funny enough, one of my bosses printed 100 copies by accident, so I almost found myself cutting and laminating over 800 ovals...But anyway, thankfully we caught that before my hand disintegrated.

Day 21: August 2, 2023:

Bittersweet day. Today is my last day at the Dixon. I finished cutting up the laminated ovals and helped prepare an art session called, "Painting with Parkinson's. This art class invites those who struggle with Parkinson's to paint and have a moment of relaxation and creativity. It was fun dipping the watercolor paper in water and handing them out, as well as making the supplies physically accessible. To add on, it was fulfilling to be part of something that helps people struggling with a brain disorder to find tranquility through art, especially since, art used to be my safe space as a child. After this, my sweet coworkers got Mexican food to celebrate my last day and birthday. I wrapped up the day by cutting out pieces of cardboard for the upcoming art project that uses recycled cardboard to make a quilt. Of course, before I left, I had to take a picture with the amazing people who made my first work experience a blast and always gave me support and laughter every day when I needed it. I would have never thought a program like YAP, would continue to make an impact on my life, especially at the end. With them, I not only was able to gain an incredible internship with hardworking and caring people, but I was able to build more self-confidence in my skills and creativity. Thanks to the staff, who are now my new family and support system, I was able to leave on a great day, not because it was my birthday, but because I knew those goodbye hugs meant "I will see you again."
