Yollocalli Arts Reach (NMMA) - Isai- Week 1

My internship is taking place in Yollocalli Arts Reach, one of the initiatives for the National Museum of Mexican Art. Yollocalli is located in the little village region of Chicago, a highly latino populated area, and is one of the many active programs during the summer. What the program provides is classes for young students that help students get involved in the community by participating in many art projects and events during the summer.

On my first day I was startled of the environment I was entering. After a week of business casual and formal settings, YOLLO gave a different environment that was passionate about artist’s creativity and the ways students wanted to be portrayed as by the way they were being dressed. I was actually dressed formally and the change of environment really made me feel more comfortable with the facility.

On my first day I was also enrolled the position of being the promoter and the person in control of the program’s Instagram page. For the time being, I will be taking pictures of everyday classes or social community activities so I can display them on the social media pages. I also shadow the educators who work for the facility and assist them on task that they may need help on.

This week I was in charge to promote the livestream of the collaborators who had an event in our community and I even took a role in assisting the livestream recording. (Even with the collaborator’s permission to add image, I blurred the background for privacy reasons) This event took place outside our building, on the garden, and was one of the most active participation event I did all week. We set up the stage instruments, speakers, lights, and took care of the seatings for our guest.
Garden Event

On Thursday, July 6, we had the chicago NBA team, The Chicago Bulls, Community  Relations come visit us to discuss new updates about our upcoming collaboration with them on designing a wall mural that represent our community and the teams aspirations on building a community. Even though I cannot show more information I still had a good time helping the students express Ideas and watching them create images of what they would like to see. These kids are so talented and I got a free hat!

Then finishing my short first week, we kickoff the community event and I helped pass out fliers. After a week of being around younger audiences it inspired me to get more involved and start helping more on the shadowing aspect of my internship. The representation of Mexican Culture is really big here and I am honored to be part of it. As for Washington week, the week help me prepare myself on representing my culture and myself of what I want to be portrayed as. The artist in this program are so talented that even I started planning out ways of how I can get involved in the community. It was a short week but I am prepared for what I’m doing next.

As of right now I am completing my second week of my internship, looking for new ways to get involved, and obviously having fun. I miss you all!
And until next time! Bye 👋
