National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) Internship Week 1- Angel Serrano

NHCC Week 1: Angel Serrano

Wednesday, July 5th 2023: Day 1

On July 5th, I started my internship at the National Hispanic Cultural Center or the NHCC. I got introduced to many of the staff members at NHCC and got a tour of the campus. I was given a key card to get into the building and got my first assignment from my supervisor Elena. Working in the Education Branch of NHCC, I am working on the community event for the Nexo Entre Raices (or the Nexus Between Roots) exhibit. I started to research types of types of printmaking like Pasta Press and Styrofoam. Writing the steps and materials needed. I began work on the Pasta Press Printmaking activity by cutting some plastic trays.

Thursday, July 6th 2023: Day 2

On July 6th, I continued to work on my assignment. I started the morning off by cutting felt out for one of the activities we are including for the event which is Homemade Stamps. I continued to gather materials after talking to Elena for the rest of the activities. We then had an Education Team Meeting going over some of the logistics of the event and what the rest of the week is going to look like. The whole team then went down to the exhibit to look at the layout of some of the interactive activities and displays. I then briefly worked on gathering more materials for the event.

Friday, July 7th 2023: Day 3

On July 7th, I helped setup for First Friday which is an breakfast meant to engage and equip volunteers with knowledge about the exhibit. We walked in the exhibit and talked about a piece that connected with us and how it could be talked about to NHCC guests. I then got to go visit Mundos de Mestizaje which is a mural done by an artist that showcases the blend of Latino(a) culture. During lunch, I gathered some more materials and researching Gelli printmaking before changing to paint some displays to match the colors of the exhibit.

Monday, July 10th 2023: Day 4

On July 10th, I stayed upstairs since the museum was closed and continued gathering materials and wrapping up the supply carts. This included cutting paper, pulling things from closets, creating labels and cleaning messy surfaces. I then reflected on my blog and thinking about what should be included. I then created a shopping list of the materials we still needed but didn't have.

Tuesday, July 11th 2023: Day 5

On July 11th, I found some extra supplies that could be used for stamps and talked to Elena about the shopping list before she left for a meeting. While I waited for further instructions, I worked on my Blog Post. I then added some adult scissors to the bag of safety scissors for the printmaking activity.

Reflection

Working on these wagons have help me with my organizational skills but also have taught me about different types of printmaking. Realizing that a lot of these materials are easy to find and are recycled shows that it can be incorporated into our lives very easily. Getting to visit the exhibit and Mundos de Metizaje shows not just latino(a) artists but New Mexican Artists and how history and culture shape our art these are things that were also seen through Washington Week.
