Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) - Billy Ramirez, Week 1/2
Welcome to my Blog
July 12
My starting date for the internship was delayed, but July 12th was my first official day. My work area is the 16th floor of the 5900 building across from LACMA (the building below). I received my worker's badge which gives me various privileges, ranging from discounts at the cafe, free visits to local museums, and free parking. After settling into my temporary cubicle, I attended a Public Programs Geffen Meeting entailing a brainstorming of ideas and potential themes for programs that will be held in the space of the LACMA museum that is currently under construction. Afterward, I was assigned a project to create a Google classroom with organized training materials for docents. To end the day off, I attended a Zoom call for curatorial Training discussing prominent works of Dutch artists and the creation of an exhibition called “The World Made Wondrous.”

I arrived at 9:30 and began my day. After settling in, I attended a Docent Leadership Training which was a lot of brainstorming about how trainees and volunteers of the museum can be mindful and conscious when discussing artwork with different audiences. Afterward, I worked at the NexGen Table and provided information to visitors on how ages 17 and below could sign up for free youth programs. Lastly, I briefly explored the galleries of LACMA and familiarized myself with the vicinity.

Basically, this day was dedicated to “working at home” so I do not have that much to cover. I continued to work on my google classroom project and made progress with the guidance of my supervisor and periodic google meet check-ins.

After checking in with my supervisor to review goals and my work plan, I attended an IS and Health & Safety Presentation (this was required and mandated by HR for new employees at LACMA). After what seemed like an interminably long presentation, I was treated by staff to select anything from the LACMA cafe menu. I ate the turkey melt which was divine and yummy - I 100% recommend it for anyone to try (the matcha latte here is really mid though). Apart from my training, I was given a tour of LACMA’s general history and explored the different galleries up for public display. To end my day up, I continued to work on my project by sorting materials for the docent training page.
This was another day dedicated to working from home. I regularly checked in with my supervisor with any inquiries. I continued to work on the project for several hours and later treated myself by going on a hike!

This day was jam-packed. First, my building had a fire drill and the alarms sounded like the purge was imminent (thought it was my time to go). It was tiresome walking down those 16 flights of stairs and my legs vigorously shook after reaching the lobby level, but on the bright side, I burned some calories off. Actually, forget burning those calories because the museum gave us ice cream afterward (very much needed). Next, we had a Geffen Planning Meeting in the morning and it ended at roughly 12:30. I was now on my lunch break and ate leftover pizza (almost burned myself taking it out of the microwave). There was another meeting after lunch to discuss the elementary programs/activities I will assist with on Saturday. Subsequently, my supervisor drove me to Charles White Elementary because apparently this school is affiliated with LACMA, and to my surprise there was an exhibition in the school which I thought to be so obscure. We used this classroom area in the exhibition space to set up and collect materials for the Saturday activity by sorting through ink, rollers, plexi platers, and more. After my internship day, my cousin invited me to an event at the Mayor's House with the United States UN Ambassador as the guest speaker (very unexpected but it was great seeing Latino representation working in government).
miss you Billy!!
