Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) - Billy Ramirez, Week 3

Image
July 20 - Thursday I worked independently for several hours and later in the day, I helped prepare and set up snacks for the GMUI (Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship) Learning Community Event. This event was basically a panel Q&A session hosted by current LACMA artists in different program departments. The audience included college students in the Getty Program who were interested in museum studies, history, the arts, and more. It was interesting to hear the experiences of each artist and thoughtful advice for upcoming artists in such a challenging and competitive field. There were roughly twelve Getty interns who came from numerous museums based in Los Angeles. It was reassuring to not be the only college student in the room considering I am the youngest in most board meetings. After the seminar was over, we met the curator of the gallery's Afro-Atlantic Histories and explored numerous artworks. Next, we visited the LACMA library and learned about the process of archives...

Week 3: July 20 - July 21 Danielis I. Morales Villegas Short but meaningful  Thursday, July 20, 2023 This Thursday I spent a calm couple of hours at the museum answering calls and helping around at the reception desk. I left my shift early because I had to meet with the executive director at the local library where I will be hosting my community outreach Storytime. Returning to a place that feels like a second home was refreshing. Being at the library reminded me of all the valuable lessons I learned while volunteering there. This visit was particularly special because it allows me to give something back to the library. As such, I took my time choosing a meaningful book. I was going to choose one about a young, Puerto Rican kid who moved to New York City because I can relate to it now more than ever. Nevertheless, I opted for a familiar book El Flamboyan Amarillo (The Yellow Flamboyan) by Georgina Lazaro. The book explores the story of a young boy and his mother who decide t...

Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science Week 2

Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science Week 2 Exhibits Week Day 5 (7/24/2023):   When I came in Cory, the Exhibition Developer,  introduced me to exhibits. He explained how they are created and some of the processing behind it. During Washington Week we had the curators come in and talk to us a bit about what they do. It was really cool to now have the exhibition steps explained to me, and I never realized just how much thought goes into creating an exhibit. Some of the things Cory introduced me to are not even going to be in existence for more than a year. Then we went to the Exhibits weekly meeting, where everyone who works in exhibits was there talking about anything new or important. The Frost is having a new feature in the Feathers to the Stars Exhibit that comes directly from SITES, the Smithsonain entity. The exhibit is called Black Wings and highlights African American leaders in aviation and space travel. It was cool to see that even here I am connected t...

7/19, Wednesday Mayx + TRYN perform in the outdoor Cadence Amphitheater for Music Fun Under the Sun on Wednesday, July 19th. Mayx + TRYN are Stanford alumni and acquaintances with Evelyn.  I started the day by completing the small tasks Evelyn told me to do before welcoming Mayx + TRYN into the museum. I took the standing sign holder, water, and a cart for the performers to use when hauling in their instruments and gear into the museum down to the amphitheater. I then went to greet the volunteers for the day with Evelyn. Together (the volunteers, Evelyn, and I) arranged the chairs in rows for the audience to sit on. I then made an announcement through the intercom, informing our museum guests about the performance. After the performance ended, we put everything back in its place and I headed to the art studio.  We also got a new Artist-in-Residence, Nancy! This means we are no longer making mosaics in the art studio. When a new Artist-in-Residence joins the team, they br...

Yollocalli Arts Reach- Isai Week 3

Hi guys ,welcome back. This week was short for me due to me missing a couple of days of the week for college orientation. At orientation I learned and got an idea of how the college lifestyle works. As I am going to a university that is really diverse, it is really nerve wracking knowing that most of these people are from places that aren't just Illinois but in other states as well. I picked up some traits that I learned in my Washington week that guided me go thorough my week. I am now more confident on meeting new people and I really am grateful that I am using all these new participation habits in a facility that is not just my internship location. I haven’t been around people my age for weeks so this orientation really made my week. Even if its not my intership, it is my personal highlight of the week.

Week 2: Embracing Texas ~July 17, 2023~ This week, I was assigned to work with the Science Samplers for most of Monday and Tuesday, and then move on to facilitate Blast from the Past: Farm Edition for the rest of the week. Since I arrived extra early this morning, I helped prepare some of the lab coats and goggles that campers would be decorating later during the week and helped open the HEBBA building with two other team members. We worked on creating molecule models, and then I moved on to perform lunch coverage for the other camp. Unfortunately, the HEBBA basement/kitchen (where the farm camp was taking place) suffers from a condition of chronically setting record-low temperatures, which isn’t a problem if you only plan to relax in the toddler’s play area or sift through boxes in the pantry for a few minutes, can be taxing if you have to settle in for camp for several hours. Although I encouraged the campers to start remembering to bring their jackets, I thought it might ...
